As Jesus hung on the cross, He looked to those who stood at His feet and said, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” – Luke 23:34
Though this plea certainly referred to those who were crucifying Him, it also applied to all of who fall short and sin. An advocate is one who pleads another’s cause and Christ is truly our advocate with the Father. The apostle John wrote, “And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” – John 2:1
We know that Christ loves and knows us, but I often wonder if we know Him. John said, “He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God…”– 1 John 2:2-5
When I look at this painting I feel that the Lord truly is our Advocate. His sacrifices make possible our forgiveness and in His mercies we find hope. I am grateful for His love and I long to keep His commandments that I might feel of His love and know Him.
